Let’s be honest — putting a baby to sleep isn’t always as peaceful as Instagram makes it look.
Between overtired cries, late-night wake-ups, and mysterious bursts of energy at 9 PM, bedtime can become a daily struggle. But here’s the good news: a simple, consistent bedtime routine can change everything.
Babies thrive on rhythm and predictability. A bedtime routine helps your baby understand that sleep is coming — and it gives their body and brain a chance to wind down.
Plus, it helps you feel more in control and connected during those last moments of the day.
Here’s a gentle routine that works for many babies, especially 3+ months old:
Dim the lights – Set the mood by lowering stimulation.
Quiet play or cuddle time – Keep things calm but affectionate.
Bath or gentle wipe-down – This signals “wind-down mode.”
Pajamas & diaper change – A consistent step that says, “we’re getting ready.”
Feeding – Whether it’s a bottle or breastfeeding, make it calm and cozy.
Short bedtime story or lullaby – Just 1–2 minutes is enough.
Lights off + into bed – Lay baby down drowsy but awake if possible.
📝 Tip: Keep the whole routine between 20–30 minutes.
Aim for the same time every night, give or take 15–20 minutes. Most babies do well starting bedtime between 6:30 PM and 8:00 PM, depending on naps and age.
The key is consistency, not perfection. Some nights will be messier than others (teething, regressions, growth spurts). That’s okay.
Even if it doesn’t “work” the first few nights, give it time — babies learn through repetition.
Avoid screen time 1 hour before bed (yes, even baby cartoons).
Create a calm sleep space: white noise, blackout curtains, cool room.
Try to put baby down before they’re overtired — that’s the sweet spot.
A consistent, loving bedtime routine:
✔️ Reduces stress for baby and parent
✔️ Helps baby fall asleep faster
✔️ Builds a sense of safety and trust
✔️ Makes bedtime feel like a bonding ritual — not a battle
